I’m Kara Davis, the artist behind Hiking.Girl.Artist.

My work starts on the trail—photographing the places that later become acrylic paintings, hand-painted jewelry, and limited edition prints. Every piece is rooted in real miles and real moments.

I hike alongside my husband—my rock, my best friend, and the one who makes sure we always find the next trail worth exploring. His work has us traveling full time, which means my inspiration is constantly changing and my “studio” moves with me.

The art now comes from wherever the miles take us.

Two places have been my biggest supporters from day one: Three Fox Vineyards in Delaplane and Vinicola Wine Bar in Front Royal. They believed in my work long before many others did, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

A little behind-the-scenes for those who may not know: galleries often keep around 50% of an art sale. Restaurants, wineries, and cafés that display artwork typically take 15–20%. Whenever one of my paintings sells through a restaurant or winery, I also tip the server who helped facilitate the sale—because as a former server and bartender, I know how much those tips matter.

The Utah Desert Series has officially begun. 🎨🌵

People think the desert is just brown, but once you slow down, you realize it’s anything but. Every hike reveals a palette of deep reds, soft pinks, rich purples, sage greens, glowing golds, and more shades of brown than I ever knew existed.

This painting is inspired by one of my favorite moments hiking the Chimney Rock Trail in Capitol Reef National Park. There’s something special about standing in a place like this and trying to capture not just what it looks like, but how it feels.

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at this work in progress. I can’t wait to share the finished painting with you.

Day 2 of 3 and we checked another National Park off the list! 🙌

We made the drive over to Bryce Canyon National Park via Highway 12, and wow… that drive alone is worth the trip. Every turn felt like another postcard.

🥾 Hike: Navajo Loop + Queen’s Garden + Rim Trail

I think I took close to 1,000 photos. Seriously, I could paint for an entire year from the inspiration on this one hike.

After exploring the scenic overlooks, we grabbed a post-hike pizza from Escalante Outfitters. The homemade sourdough crust was incredible, and the Bighorn Pizza might be one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. 🍕

Because apparently we hadn’t hiked enough, we squeezed in one more stop at Upper Calf Creek in Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument. It was over 600 feet straight down in about a mile to a crystal-clear pool above the waterfall. The water was freezing… and absolutely perfect after hiking in the desert.

Then came the climb back up. Let’s just say that can of O₂ I laughed at buying? Yeah… it earned its keep. 😂

Another day packed with epic views, tired legs, and enough inspiration to fill a year’s worth of paintings.

Day 1 of 3 at Capitol Reef National Park and I’m pretty sure this is what summer dreams are made of. ☀️🥾

There is honestly nothing better than hiking through cool water when the desert is turning up the heat.
After the trails, we refueled with burgers from Capitol Burger, loaded up the BOTE kayak, and spent the afternoon paddling Lower Bowns Reservoir. Then it was back to camp for a hammock break with a slice of Capitol Reef pie (because it’s basically mandatory 🍒🥧), followed by a salad for dinner… balance, right? 😂
From sandstone cliffs to cool water, paddling, pie, and a hammock nap—I’d call that a perfect day.

When the forecast says 100° in the desert, you start looking for creative ways to stay cool outside. ☀️

Originally, I found a hike that followed a river and figured we’d spend the day wading through cool water. But what I really wanted to do was check the box on my ever growing list and paddle the Daily section of the Colorado River near Moab was begging me to cross it off!

With water levels low and the rapids mellow, it felt like the perfect opportunity to try something new. So we picked up a BŌTE KODA Aero Double Kayak @Scheelssports and launched into an adventure neither of us had much experience with.

A few hours later, we were completely hooked.

There’s something different about seeing the landscape from the water—the red rock cliffs, the quiet stretches of river, and a perspective you just can’t get from the trail.

Safe to say we’re already planning a longer paddle trip, because this might have just become our new favorite way to experience the outdoors. 🚣‍♀️❤️

Nothing humbles you faster than a hike that technically checks all your normal boxes… but starts at 8,755 ft. 😅

4 miles? Fine.
994 ft elevation gain? Also fine.
Trying to breathe with what felt like one recycled oxygen molecule floating around the mountain? Absolutely not fine.

At one point I seriously considered turning around just to go buy that canned oxygen I mocked at Walmart. Legs were heavy, lungs were screaming, and my hiking pace became “slow-moving tortoise.”

But Silver Lake showed off at the top, and somehow the suffering immediately became “worth it.” Recovery = hammocks, snacks, and pretending we’re elite outdoor people.

How do you recover from the hardest hike you have ever done? Hammocks. That’s how! I seriously underestimated the elevation + gain. Let me break it down- Hawaii is 17 ft (we were there mid May for 10 days), then went to Front Royal, VA is 545 ( there 10 days), Salt Lake is 4327 (4 days), Park City is 7000 ( for location reference), Brighton is 8755 ( THIS IS WHERE WE CAMPED/hiked) then we hiked another 994 ft of gain. OMG when I tell you I thought my legs were going to fall off, and I could not catch my breath that’s no joke. I could hardly move my legs, they felt like bricks and (after looking it up) I was breathing only 60% my normal oxygen consumption in VA. That can of oxygen at Walmart was not something to laugh at but actually buy🤦🏽‍♀️ #hiking #elevation #altitud #hammocks #lessonforlife

10 years of owing this beautiful 38 year old antique RV. It’s literally the best built RV.
Updates have only been cosmetic, convenience or standard maintenance. This thing is solid.

Getting it ready to live in again
(part time) as we travel between East and West Cost for my husband’s job. Last few weeks have been tackling my last remaining list of upgrades. Instant hot water (yeah long showers!), new black tank, new breaks, painted counters and installed new sink, updated wallpaper, new platform for master bed room, built a cabinet and bought new mattress, repainted fridge and repaired the area it sits in, and touched up paint though out. 20 years ago I graduated from the University of Hawaii, my daughter was turning 2 the same week. As a single mom, I worked so hard to graduate and she was my driving force, which was reflected in her photo on my graduation hat. When your in Hawaii and the Volcano is due to erupt you book a fight and pack a day bag. Did a few miles in the park this morning with husband after having breakfast with my best friend who lives here, we then headed down to black sand beach. On the way back it finally started erupting and we had a great view from the Road just outside of the park. You can see all the tephar falling down.
